The Kogan Academy of Dramatic Arts (KADA) is a leading London conservatoire offering exceptional training for actors and directors, with an international reputation. We are the only established drama school with a complete acting methodology – The Science of Acting –and an integrated directing course.
We provide full-time and part-time acting and directing training and after 25 years teaching actors for stage and screen, we are proud to quote the founder of the Academy:
“Никто не учит лучше, никто не заботится больше.”
“Nobody Teaches Better; Nobody Cares More” Sam Kogan (1946-2004)
Our conservatoire is unique in having a trade-mark technique, developed by our founder Sam Kogan, renowned Russian director, acting teacher and author of the book ‘ The Science of Acting’ (Routledge 2009).
“Everything important to the creation of character and good acting can be found here.” Richard Brake (The Night King in Game of Thrones)
What also makes us stand out from other drama schools is that our acting courses have an optional directing module course pathway which students can undertake whilst training at KADA.
This directing course pathway is unique in the country; it follows long-standing Russian director training strategies that famously combine tradition and innovation. A fully hands-on course, each of its students direct, among other things, several short and feature length, fully produced theatre productions in our house theatre, covering a variety of genres: drama, comedy, opera, Shakespeare etc…
All students in all of our courses benefit from the directing course because it provides performance experience and in-depth, continual tutor feedback unattainable in any other comparable acting course.
“The most honest and expedient route to helping people become the best actors they can be.” David Bark-Jones (Guy Ritchie’s ‘RocknRolla’ / Richard Hannay ’39 Steps’ London West End)
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Academy, we are re-launching our 3 year, full-time Diploma course based on the highly successful course designed by our founder, Sam Kogan, and which has been taught at the Academy for over twenty years.
The evening option (two evenings a week and all day Saturday) is also available and covers the same core content as the full-time course, however allowing its students to combine study with work.
We also currently deliver a full-time BA (Hons) acting course jointly with Kingston University London although recruitment for this course is not open this year. Our shining reports by the Quality Assurance Agency and British Accreditation Council can be accessed online.
Graduates, many of whom teach in our courses having been personally trained by Sam Kogan to do so. Other graduates and pupils of Sam Kogan include British and international actors ranging from the chameleon like Mike Leigh regular Eddie Marsan (Terry Donovan in ‘Ray Donovan’/ Mr Norrell in ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’) to Sara-Marie Maltha (‘The Killing’ - Denmark) assistant director and wife of famed Danish director Bille August.
Further: Philip Bulcock (‘Jersey Boys’ original West End Cast), Pooky Quesnel (Shared Experience’s ‘Anna Karenina’, ‘Great Expectations’ 2012 film, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’, ‘Waterloo Road’), Richard Brake (The Night King in ‘Game of Thrones’); Philip Pritchard (Trevor Nunn’s West End production of Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’).
KADA graduates also include respected directors such as Emma Taylor, artistic director of Canal Cafe Theatre, home to the legendary ‘NewsRevue’, Audrey Sheffield (London theatre productions – ‘The Scar Test’ / ‘We Too are Giants’), Marie Parker-Shaw, Artistic Director of Månteatern in Lund, Sweden and Alex Dower, Artistic Director of international multi-award winning theatre company ‘Creating Freedom’ who deliver projects using the Science of Acting in prisons, refugee camps and mental health settings world-wide.
