The exchange term at Advanced Product Design Programme provides the students with professional tools, methods and a creative mindset to work with the development and design of the best possible solution for a given problem or identified design opportunity. The aim is at identifying and defining the problem before the conceptualization phase, with emphasis on problem identification and definition as the basic starting point in the design process.
The studies are project-based and often carried out in collaboration with industrial partners, research units or local authorities. Most projects concern problems that the students identify themselves, problems that have not already been solved countless times by others. This implies less emphasis on trendy, fashionable consumer products and more on professional products for qualified users. This includes product areas such as the medico-technical industry, design for the disabled, professional tools and equipment, public services and equipment and a variety of product applications for emerging technologies.
5ID077 Form Workshop 1
The course contains specialised studies within the field of form theory, sound and product interaction.
Experiment with sound, imagery and interaction, 3 credits.
The section contains several short practical design projects where students in teams explore the connections between sound, imagery and interaction, and their relation to chosen products identities and brands. The students are introduced to relevant software for sound processing during this section.
Product analysis and project work, 4.5 credits.
This section contains design and form theory where students in teams analyse and design a product with form and sound qualities. The result is presented with physical models and adherent sound demonstrations.
5ID101 Product Analysis
This course introduces the students to the complexities of product development with a focus on construction, material selections and production technique. The course also includes a course in the 3D-modelling software SolidWorks and Rapid Prototyping, the tool for prototyping development.
Course Section 1: Solid Works course, 1.5 credits
This section gives specialised knowledge in 3D modelling in SolidWorks through a number of small exercises.
Course Section 2: Product Analysis, 6 credits
This section contains analyse of the structure and construction of an existing product. The construction will then be improved and redesigned through SolidWorks with the purpose of creating files for prototype production in Rapid Prototyping, (RPT). In order to create a full-functioning prototype the students will the assembly the RPT models with the existing components in.
5ID089 Project 2: Strategic Design
The course includes advanced studies in the field of strategic design and brand identity.
Strategic design, seminar, 3 credits
The course part includes analysis of a selected number of companies and the levels of their corporate identities or brands and what they stand for. The course ends with a presentation of design strategies for the selected company.
Strategic design, project 12 credits
This part includes individual work to identify and describe the possibilities for design and development of new products that respect their selected corporate characteristics.
