The course is based on scientific classics in the area where the student is expected to use the articles for analysis and critical study of technological development. To reach the above objective following parts are included: Technology choices and technology strategiesThis part includes technology perspective of competitive ability. First, there is technology as a top management issue, development of organizational competence on technology, and development of technology strategies. Second, there is product life cycle, technological leaps, and other models which describe technological development over time. Last is theory on how choices on technology strategy influence potential future profits for the company. Organizing and leading technical development workThis part focuses on the innovation process of the company. This includes issues of structures, leadership, team roles, and communications patterns and their effects on creativity and action. Product development is a dynamic process where technological competence and market knowledge gradually combines into innovations. A review of models to understand and analyze how different structural and dynamic properties affect the organization's ability to create innovations is made.Technology development in a global worldThe innovation process is increasingly going global and is conducted in international networks and alliances that need to be coordinated. This calls for new demands on how technical development work should be organized and led. Demands of adaptation to different markets and cultural differences are discussed, as well as how to manage a global project team.Project workStudents shall discuss and apply the theoretical framework of strategic innovation management by planning and conducting a study of a real company. Aspects like strategic decisions will be analyzed with the models from the course.
