Air pollution and climate change and its effect on ecosystems and human health are globally major challenges today and in the future. The Atmosphere, Climate and Ecosystems (ACE) Master Programme gives you the chance to learn how human activities are linked to physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere, climate and ecosystems and how related problems can be mitigated. You get the opportunity to take both fundamental and applied courses in the fields of atmospheric, climatic, earth and ecosystem sciences. The fundamental courses give you the tools needed to understand and analyse problems related to the interaction between atmosphere, climate and ecosystems. The applied courses are directly related to certain important ACE issues, such as mitigation, international agreements, global change and energy systems. The program is research oriented with leading researchers in ACE areas as teachers in the courses and up to a full year of thesis work done in a research group.
Career opportunities
The aim of ACE is to prepare you for research or administrative tasks where solid knowledge in atmospheric, climate and ecosystem science is of concern. Typically, after passing this master programme, you could initiate an academic career, conduct research on industrial applications or be an expert advisor within the governmental or business sector.
Outline of the program
The program starts with two mandatory courses (Sep-Nov):
- Global change - problem, analysis, measures (ES2613) 7.5 hec
- Climate change in an earth system perspective (GVN460) 7.5 hec
These two courses are then followed by optional courses (37.5 hec) hosted by several of the science departments.
The third mandatory course is given during the third quarter (Feb-March)
- Biogeochemistry (GVK460) 7.5 hec
The final course on the program is the master thesis work
- Master thesis work (60 hec)
Alternatively you can make a 45 hec master thesis work and include one (15 hec)/two (7.5 hec) more optional course/s
- Master thesis work (45 hec)
Courses are also offered through the Nordic programme Atmosphere-Biosphere Studies (ABS).
Master thesis
It is recommended that your master thesis work (60 hec) is conducted towards the end of the Master's Programme. Doing a 60 hec thesis project is highly research related and beneficial for the understanding of the program topic and can be advantageous for continued studies.
