Biblical Studies
In this course, the student learns to understand the basic history of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament as well as the interpretation of these texts in the Early Church. It conveys fundamental results and methods of modern exegesis, as well as Patristic Bible interpretations and perceptions of the Bible as they developed in early Christian times. Throughout the course, the students learn to apply different perspectives and methods to the biblical corpus, and to grasp basic distinctions between studying the text in its original context and the text as it functions within the larger framework of the Church in historic times.At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to: - display basic knowledge and critical awareness of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, their background and growth, as well as the goals and methods of modern exegesis - be able to reflect on different interpretative traditions, their contexts, and their theological and ethical consequences - demonstrate an awareness of how the Biblical Scriptures were interpreted and understood by the Church Fathers.
