Interpretation, Theory and Method with Paper, Distance Education
In this course, students learn to interpret religious texts within different contexts and from different perspectives, as well as the human work of art. What does it mean to understand a historical, theological, or philosophical text, and which tools and methods of interpretation are relevant? How are we to encounter the human work of art? Students engage in theoretical reflection as well as in practical application of various methods through interpretative exercises. The course also discusses gender aspects of religious experience, ethical aspects of interpretation, and personal responsibility for the consequences of interpretation. Special emphasis is placed on source criticism and on the historical, literary, and ideological contexts to which the texts belong. At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to: - display basic knowledge about the history of hermeneutics, and a critical awareness of theological, philosophical and ethical perspectives on textual interpretation - be able to employ basic methods for interpreting religious texts and experiences, and the human work of art, and be able to account for these in oral presentation and in writing - be able to reflect on theological and ethical consequences of interpretation
