Intermedia Studies: The Aesthetics of Popular Culture
The course deals with various expressions of popular culture within a 20th century arts and media context.
The collaborations between different media will be emphasized. Main focus will be on contemporary western culture, the latter years of the 20th century and the expressions of postmodern culture, although several episodes in the cultural history of the whole century will be studied historically. Advertising, television, music videos, movies, literature, music etc. will be discussed. Theoretical tools will be introduced from the research field of intermedia studies, cultural sociology, hermeneutics, media history, and semiotics. Several examples will be in focus for analysis and discussion.
