Master in Communication
The increasingly globalized, digitalized, and specialized society we live in today poses a number of complex challenges: fostering inclusion, equality and diversity in fast-changing work environments, ensuring and strengthening mental wellbeing in the light of online harassment and information overload, or for example listening and being heard in an arena of many competing voices. Communication is key in meeting challenges. Our programme empowers you to grow as an independent, critical researcher and skilled professional, able to navigate the intricate dimensions of intercultural, organizational, and digital communication.
One programmethree areas of specialization
Insights and perspectives from disciplines such as media and communication studies, linguistics, organization and management research, informatics, pedagogy, and sociology foster in-depth understanding of communication as a field of research and practice. You can choose an educational path that interests you after gaining advanced knowledge and skills in three areas of specialization:
- Intercultural communication explores the influence of culture on communication in areas of application ranging from business to cooperation and conflict.
- Organizational communication focuses on issues, approaches to, and challenges of communication within organizations, and between organizations and external stakeholders.
- Digital communication examines the role of digital technologies in communicationhow they shape communication and how we can use them to study communication.
Addressing the challenges of digitalization
Our programme incorporates other academic disciplines to work together in exploring the digitalization of society, including the role of communication technologies and interactions between people and technology. This allows you to apply technology (like eye tracking software or virtual reality technology) to communication studies.
Intercultural and collaborative
We prioritize interactive forms of learning, with teachers as facilitators rather than solely transmitters of knowledge. Problem-based learning in an intercultural environment strengthens your ability to collaboratively analyse and solve complex communication challenges. Training in rhetoric and argumentation, debate, and negotiation develops your practical communication skills. You have the opportunity to engagein an annual student conference or in groups like Lindholmen Students for Sustainabilityand develop your own ideas for student groups and events you want to organize. We are located at Campus Lindholmen, where bigger companies like Ericsson but also smaller and innovative organizations are based, providing opportunities for networking and connecting academia to practice.
Who Should Apply?
Do you want to discover the interplay of words, facial expressions, gestures, and touch?
Are you interested in the application of rhetorical and argumentative strategies?
Do you wonder which role language, identity, power, and ethics play in intercultural communication?
Do you want to dig deep into schools of thought, theoretical approaches, and methods of empirical communication research?
While this programme is most suited for students with a social sciences or humanities background, we welcome applications from everyone motivated to explore dynamic complexities of human communication.
