Short summary 

Are you interested in global challenges, equality and sustainability issues? Do you seek deeper knowledge on shifting power relations and want to manage sustainability issues in practice? At the Bachelor's Programme in International Relations you learn about a wide range of international conditions and relationships, and gain skills to analyse, investigate and evaluate issues related to international conflicts and collaborations. 

About the programme 

Global contexts, processes and institutions are playing an increasingly important role for working life as a whole and for people's everyday lives. In our increasingly globalized world where international relations are reshaped and power relations are shifted, the demand for professionals with knowledge of global issues, and competence to analyse international events have increased.  

The Bachelor's Programme in International Relations focus on a wide range of international conditions and relationships and give you skills to analyse, investigate and evaluate issues related to international conflicts and collaborations. 

At the programme you gain specific knowledge on: 

  • international political economy 
  • security 
  • conflict analysis 
  • peacebuilding 
  • humanitarian interventions  
  • migration and sustainability 
  • the structure of the international system 
  • power relations and solid knowledge of individual countries 
  • multilateral organizations and world regions 


Gender equality perspective 

The programme have a highlighted focus on gender equality issues related to international relations, and different perspectives on gender and gender equality will permeate all courses. All courses will also include lectures and themes that explicitly relate to gender and how it interacts with other power relations such as class, disabilities, race, religion, sexuality, etc.  

Sustainability and international relations 

The critical approaches and reflective perspectives of the programme contribute to the ability to better address difficult and socially controversial issues regarding how sustainability issues should be handled. At the programme you get in-depth knowledge on peaceful and inclusive societies, the connection between all goals in the Sustainable Development Agenda and the connection between climate change, social vulnerability and conflict. Through knowledge of the international system and how multilateral cooperation works, you are provided with tools to understand and manage sustainability issues in practice.  

Preparing you for the labour market 

The programme offers proficiency courses with project management and training in conflict resolution and foreign diplomacy. The programme also offer an internship semester where you can establish contacts and gain work experience.

Programme structure and content  

The introductory and in-depth courses during the first year, provide you with different theories and perspectives on international relations. During your second year you develop deeper understanding for current issues related to the subject, and attend proficiency courses to prepare you for the labour market. During your third year you can apply for exchange studies, do an internship, or take optional courses. The third year also offers unique courses on foreign policy and diplomacy, and in conflict resolution. You finish your studies at the programme by writing your thesis guided by your supervisor.   

Ongoing research projects and themes will be given space in the program, and the programme balances traditional concepts with the latest research findings and a visibility of voices, perspectives and research from, for example, the global south. 

Throughout the programme you will participate in group and individual assignments, presentations, and seminars.
