Migration, identitet och makt
Göteborgs universitetMigration, identitet och makt
This course analyses dominant discourses and practices relating to international migration and to multicultural diversity from a critical and anthropological perspective. You will examine the role of the nation state in migration processes as well as new forms of belonging and identity, such as diasporas and transnational communities. Other examples of central elements of the migration process in relation to the state, which will be explored during the course, are border control, the asylum process and the concept of deportability.
You will also probe into the organization of cultural diversity in different societies, discursive and structural violence experienced by migrants and children of migrants, and explore human responses to displacement as well as to forced immobility. These processes, which all are induced by contemporary mobility, will be linked to anthropological debates concerning changing constructions of identities, power, agency and belonging. The overall aim of the course is to provide you with relevant skills for professional work with issues related to migration (i.e. forced migration, integration, education, international policy and law).
